The Sizzler

The sizzler was a short lived look that was popular around 1972. I don’t know the origin of the name but it was a very short dress, often made of slinky polyester, with puffy sleeves and matching bloomers to wear underneath. They were also very popular as sewing patterns. I’m surprised they haven’t been resurrected since rompers seem to be back. And sizzlers are so much easier to deal with than one piece rompers when going to the bathroom. I’ve always had a practical approach to fashion.

Cut-offs, hot pants and halter tops were among the slutty clothes of my youth so when I see recent pictures from Coachella I’m disappointed by the lack of originality of the outfits worn. I loved those too – especially in the summer when lying in the sun, covered in baby oil.

In 1972 I was in junior high – what is now called middle school. I was in public school for the first time – having spent all previous grades at catholic school. Being able to wear something other than a uniform was like going to a banquet after a long fast.

I wore a sizzler to my first dance, thrilled to awkwardly sway with boys to One Is the Loneliest Number and Hello It’s Me, a whole life ahead of me.
